Andreas Engel installed a Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope at the Biozentrum in Basel, co-directed the Maurice Müller Institute for Structural Biology, and worked on membrane protein structure and dynamics, using electron and atomic force microscopy. His interests concern the regulation of water homeostasis in plants and vertebrates, the structural basis of pathogen-host interactions, and the signaling network of visual systems.
