Meiosis is a specialized cell division process, active in germ cells, that generates genetically distinct haploid cells. Meiosis in human females is highly error-prone and frequently gives rise to gametes that have too many or too few chromosomes (aneuploid cells). My laboratory studies the cellular mechanisms that protect the fidelity of the chromosome segregation process, including the role of the synaptonemal complex, in mammalian cells.
