Neurons in the brain make connections (synapses) with up to 10,000 distinct partners. Synapses are made of ~500 different proteins. My group works on the problem of how synapses maintain and modify their proteomes to maintain and modify information stored in the network. We use imaging, electrophysiology, biochemistry and next-generation sequencing to understand how the local synthesis and degradation of proteins give rise to proteostasis.
