Transfer RNA from all organisms contains modified nucleosides which are derivatives of the four major nucleosides. We have studied the synthesis and function of modified nucleosides and elucidated complex biosynthetic pathways. Many modified nucleosides with different chemical structures, located in different positions in the tRNA, and are parts of different tRNA species all improve the reading frame maintenance, which is a fundamental property of translation in all organisms.
