The aim of our research is to understand gene expression from the perspective of individual mRNAs. To this end, we use single-molecule fluorescent microscopy to image the lives of mRNAs in single cells and engineer novel RNA biosensors that enable specific events (e.g., translation or degradation) to be directly observed. We also use structural biology to understand the mechanisms used by RBPs to regulate the distinct stages of an mRNA's life.
