My group is interested in determining the biological role of ADARs: the RNA editing enzymes that convert adenosine to inosine in dsRNA. ADAR1 is essential for innate immunity; however questions remain on how this occurs. ADAR2 is important for correct functioning of the nervous system. We also use Drosophila as a model system; mutants of the single Adar gene are barely viable and also have an innate immune phenotype which is highly significant.
