Breaks in the DNA can be repaired by two major and alternative mechanisms that compete for the same substrate, namely homologous recombination and non-homologous end-joining. In our laboratory we investigate how the choice between both repair pathways is made, its relevance for cellular and organismal survival and disease, and its potential as a therapeutic target for the treatment of cancer and some genetically inherited disorders.
