We are defining the transcriptional networks that program haematopoietic stem cells during embryonic development, and the embryonic signalling pathways that lay these programmes down. A similar approach to specification and differentiation of the myocardium is being taken. These processes are highly conserved in evolution allowing exploitation of the considerable technical advantages of the amphibian (Xenopus) and zebrafish model systems.
