Our long-term goal is to functionally dissect the germ cell life cycle. We use Drosophila to study primordial germ cell (PGC) specification in the early embryo that makes them distinct from the mortal soma, the cellular mechanisms controlling PGC migration towards the somatic gonad, the regulatory network that allows germline stem cell maintenance in the adult and strategies that protect the germ cell genome from mobile elements and pathogens.
