We study mechanisms that regulate stem cell function in adult tissues and the ways in which those mechanisms get hijacked by cancer cells to enable tumor formation. We identified mechanisms that distinguish stem cell self-renewal from progenitor proliferation as well as the locations and cellular compositions of niches for adult hematopoietic stem cells, including the Leptin Receptor expressing stromal cells that regulate the bone marrow niche.
