We explore the underlying mechanisms between bacterial infections and carcinogenesis. The human mucosa is the site where pathogens initiate infections and our defense system is challenged to counteract approaching assaults. Chronic infections may lead to permanent damage of the mucosal epithelium and subsequently to carcinogenesis. A better understanding of these molecular interactions may pave the way towards disease prevention and treatment.
