We study the contribution of chromatin-based epigenetic processes to heritable phenotypic variation. As TE sequences are associated with most of the known cases of epimutable alleles in plants and mammals, we focus on this typically neglected component of genomes and on the factors that control their epigenetic state and activity as well as their impact on adjacent genes. We use primarily the plant Arabidopsis and (epi)genomic approaches.
